Kat's Curious Story...
In a century-old log cabin, nestled in the woods and meadows of the Sierra Nevada mountains, lived a wild-spirited child. She roamed the forest barefoot, her old-fashioned floral-print dress and long braids flying behind her as she embarked on endless quests for adventure.
Add a frog to one pocket and a well-worn storybook to the other, and you have me at 8 years old.
My afternoons were spent reading or wandering with my best friend Cookie, a retired circus pony, exploring abandoned gold-rush-era homesteads and gathering interesting plants and rocks.
Jewelry was a big part of my life from the beginning. Some of my earliest memories are of time spent in my father’s studio and of helping him gather materials to make scrimshaw pendants (engraving on bone).
Craft shows were my family's livelihood. Many of our friends and fellow artisans were incredibly skilled jewelers who created their designs with gems and gold, mined and panned in the very hills where I grew up.
My unusual upbringing instilled in me the idea that meaningful jewelry is so much more than decoration. It can carry the beauty and wonder of the natural world, tie us to our history and mythology, or it can be a keepsake to evoke memories and nostalgia.
